The 2021 Elbling Alte Reben (old vines) from Jonas was made with fruit from almost 40-year-old vines. Elbling, one of the oldest grape varieties in Europe, thrives on the shell limestone soils of the Obermosel. While most of this grape is used for domestic sparkling wine or blended into everyday cuvees, Jonas has rescued his Elbling parcels from extinction. Winemaking and ageing was all done along natural lines without intervention. After a few days of skin contact the juice was gently pressed and transferred to used Burgundy barrels for fermentation. The wine offers an intriguing mix of wild herbs, grapefruit, green apple, pepper, meadow flowers, and wet stone. A stunning wine with exciting interplay of vibrant acidity, savoury spice, and refreshing zest, making it a captivating character-driven wine that truly expresses its terroir. A bold statement from a winemaker dedicated to preserving and elevating the potential of the Obermosel region’s indigenous grape and showcasing the magic that can be achieved beyond Riesling.

About the Winemaker

Jonas Dostert is pure dynamite- A energetic young winemaker making waves in the lesser-known Obermosel region of Germany, near the Luxembourg border. Based in Nittel, his vineyards are a departure from the steep, slate slopes typical of the Mosel. Here, gentle 30-degree hills with limestone-rich soils set the stage for his focus on the ancient Elbling grape, a variety with roots tracing back to medieval times.

Elbling, often overshadowed by Riesling, thrives in this unique terroir, delivering wines with piercing acidity, low alcohol (typically 10-12%), and incredible freshness. Jonas, inspired by his studies at Geisenheim University and his time working with the legendary Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy, has embraced this grape's potential. If you want an underdog story yoi won't find a better one than this. He crafts his wines using Burgundy-sourced barrels to balance Elbling’s vibrant acidity with subtle, refined oak influence, creating wines that are both energetic and refreshingly drinkable.

Since taking over his family’s winery, Jonas has been committed to organic practices, with some vineyards certified since 2012. His meticulous approach, even in just his second vintage in 2019, reflects his deep respect for terroir. While he plans to produce site-specific wines in the future, he is taking time to understand how each vineyard contributes to his blends.

Jonas’s wines are a testament to his dedication and vision. They are not for the faint-hearted; their crisp, firm acidity appeals to those who appreciate vibrant, intense wines. Whether working with Elbling or exploring other varieties like Chardonnay, Jonas is proving that the Obermosel has immense untapped potential.
