Weingut Knauss is a family-owned winery located in the Rems Valley of southern Germany, with a rich history spanning four generations. Winemaking began as a hobby for the family, but Andi Knauss transformed it into a passionate career. Trained in Austria, Andi mastered organic vineyard practices and took over the winery back in 2004. He now manages over 15 hectares which are spread across 100 different plots in the village of Strümpfelbach, where diverse limestone and marl soils create unique terroirs.
The vineyards are situated at altitudes of 300-400 meters, and Andi has painstakingly built the estate parcel by parcel, like a mosaic, sometimes acquiring land just a single row at a time. The wines are made using hand-harvested fruit, direct pressing, and ambient fermentation in stainless steel with native yeasts. Aging occurs over 8 months in stainless steel and large 3000-liter barrels, without filtration or fining, and with minimal sulphur added.
The Knauss family specializes in Lemberger (also known as Blaufrankisch), Riesling, Trollinger and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), producing wines that reflect a commitment to natural, biodynamic practices. This dedication results in expressive wines that showcase the distinctive character of Württemberg and the unique Remstal terroir, making them a favourite among those seeking authentic and sustainable wines.
