A Gemischter Satz is a field blend of various grape varietals that are co- planted and  fermented together. When it comes to the Zahels, they are literally Gemischter Satz royalty and craft some of the finest examples. The wines are traditionally drunk in the local Vienesse Heurigen.

The famous Wiener Nussberg is located in the 19th district of Vienna, right next to the Danube river in the north-western part of the city. From this hill, you get the most beautiful view of the Austrian capital and you can still find vines that are up to 60 years old. The Nussberg soil consists of pure rocky shell limestone with sandy clay and a top layer of flysch sandstone, giving the wine a complex structure.

Aged on its lees for 5 months in traditional 1200 litre Stockinger barrels. Ripe exotic aromas with a somewhat Burgundian character, fruit forward and elegant in taste, light spice underlined by subtle minerality with a long explosive finish.

Grape: Chardonnay, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder and Gewürztraminer

Farming: Organic & Biodynamic

ABV: 13%

Bottle Size: 75cl

About the Winemaker

The Zahel family winery has a long and proud history in Vienna and Alex very much preserves and builds upon that history but he’s also right up at the cutting edge of contemporary thinking for the region as well. Alex Zahel is the 4th generation of Zahel's, having been passed the torch by his uncle Richard. Since taking the lead, he’s proud to continue the tradition of ushering Vienna’s most charming wines from the vineyard to the bottle. As in the past, Richard works carefully to maintain the vineyards and manages the tradition steeped Heurigen. Alex’s wife Hilary works alongside her husband at the winery. Together, this small yet mighty team ensures that the family business continues to grow.

Alex makes a number of different Gemischter Satz, his Wiener Gemischter Satz is setting the standard and is super approachable whilst the Nussberg has distinctly more weight and feels more Burgundian in style. He also produces a truly enticing range of wines which started out as experimental bottlings but which now make up a regular, though individually very limited, part of his range.

The Zahel vineyards are both organic and Demter biodynamic certified across all 95 parcels within the city limits of Vienna. The Zahel's are also proud that they will be one of the first European wineries to attain the regenerative farming certification, which takes into account the human impact of farming and its management to promote the regeneration of soil, water, air and biodiversity for the whole ecosystem.
