Der Graf, meaning "The Count," is a Riesling from the renowned Piesporter Grafenberg and Falkenberg vineyard sites. These vineyards are both east and south-facing, with an average vine age of about 40 years. The name "Der Graf" comes directly from the official name of one of the vineyard sites.

In the cellar, all fermentations are natural, and Philip does not block malolactic fermentation, which is somewhat unique in the Mosel region. Another distinctive feature is the extended elevage: fermentation in barrel on full lees with 12 months aging in tonneau, followed by an additional 6 months in stainless steel tanks before being bottled after 18 months. The final wine is unfiltered.

The result is a deeply complex, multi-layered, rich, and textural wine with notes of orchard fruit, crushed slate rock minerality, and the powerful pull of a Shire horse.

About the Winemaker

Philip Lardot was born in Finland, raised in the Netherlands and now lives in Germany crafting breath-taking wines on the Mosel. Some would say Philips wines are revolutionary, others would say he is revitalizing amongst other growers a style once popular but forgotten with extended elevate and lees ageing.

Philip first came to the Mosel working at various wineries with stints at Clemens Busch and later Mosel maverick Ulli Stein where he ultimately became Assistant winemaker. It was here at Stein that he would start working on his own project. Philip’s first vintage was 2016 and today he farms some 26 parcels spread over 5 hectares of steep Mosel vineyards together with his partner Rosalie. One third of these vineyards consist of old, sometimes pre-war, ungrafted Riesling vines trained in the traditional “Einzelpfahlerziehung” (single post) way on steep, dry-walled terraces.

The winemaking approach is best described as common sense with a respect for the living, breathing ecosystem that surrounds them.
