The Kirchspiel, one of Rheinhessen's most celebrated Grand Cru vineyards (Grosses Gewächs), opens up like an amphitheatre toward the Rhine, and receives the sun’s first rays in the morning. Here the vineyards, with their east to southeast exposure, are sheltered from the cold west winds; this provides the Kirchspiel with a choice microclimate. The vineyards here are planted mainly in the upper portion of the site, with a gradient of up to thirty per cent. Primarily clay marl with limestone deposits as well as loam composed of weathered limestone –this gives the Kirchspiel its unmistakeable, spicy and elegant character.

These wines always feel cooler compared to Morstein or Aulerde and characteristically have much more white fruit, spice, leaning more towards stone and salt, and pepperiness. It is not the most voluminous of the local GG (Grosses Gewächs) but it is the most subtle, refined and elegant.
