About the Winemaker

Schloss Lieser is located in the heart of the Mosel and over the years has risen to prominence under the ownership of Thomas Haag, one of Germany’s most promising winemakers. Son of the renowned Wilhelm Haag of the Fritz Haag estate, Thomas has carved out a distinct identity for Schloss Lieser, turning it into a pillar of excellence in the region. His prime vineyard plots lie in the south-facing Niederberg Helden vineyard of Lieser. Just a few hundred meters from his father's Brauneberg vineyards which are today farmed by his brother Oliver Haag. This vineyard is known for its heavy, thick-set grey/blue slate. The unique soil composition here produces wines with a heavier structure, often requiring more bottle age to reveal their full potential.

Since 2004, Thomas has also been working with vines in the famed Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr vineyard, a prestigious site gifted to him by his father. This addition has further elevated the estate's portfolio and status, bringing in the elegance and finesse that the Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr vineyard is known for. Thomas Haag's approach to winemaking is marked by meticulous attention to detail, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. His rigorous vineyard management, coupled with low yields, often the lowest in the Mosel, ensure that only the best fruit makes it to the cellar. This commitment to quality, even in challenging vintages, results in wines that are consistently outstanding. His wines are known for their precision, depth, and ability to age, reflecting the true essence of the Mosel terroir.
