A blend of Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt, aged in large, used wooden barrels, this wine is super approachable and juicy. On the nose it offers ripe, dark aromas of black cherry, juniper berries, blackberry, and a hint of tea leaves, with an inky depth. The palate, by contrast, is delicate and finely structured, starting juicy with subtle tannins, almost dancing with its light-footed freshness and gentle spiciness.

This wine is a prime example of an all-day, all-night red – a versatile companion that beautifully reflects the dark, spicy terroir of the region, even though its composition changes each year. Crafted entirely by hand – from vineyard work to harvest and sorting – it embodies a no-frills, fun-loving spirit. It also pays homage to the sometimes rough-and-ready drinking customs of the locals, making it a true celebration of the region’s character and traditions.

About the Winemaker

At the remarkable age of just 20, Christoph Wachter-Wiesler took over his family’s Wachter-Wiesler winery, becoming the fifth generation to champion their legacy of exceptional Austrian wine. With invaluable support from his sister, Christoph focused on Blaufränkisch, Austria’s iconic red wine grape, renowned for its elegance and aging potential. Rooted in the heart of the Eisenberg wine region, the Wachter-Wiesler estate spans 16 hectares across 65 meticulously maintained parcels.

This unique region, rich in iron-laden greenschist soils, shapes the distinct character of their organic Austrian wines. Burgenland’s terroir imbues their Blaufränkisch with a rare minerality, a hallmark that has positioned Wachter-Wiesler among the leaders of Austrian red wine producers.

Over the last decade, Christoph and his sister transitioned the winery to certified organic viticulture, championing a natural, minimalist approach in the cellar. Their natural wines are crafted with no additives, no fining, and minimal sulphur, resulting in pure, unadulterated expressions of the terroir.

Now in his 30s, Christoph continues to refine both Blaufränkisch and Olaszrizling, producing single-vineyard wines that showcase the full potential of these native varieties.
