Trollinger, also known as Vernatsch or Schiava, may have its origins in the Italian region of Trentino Alto Adige, but today the majority is planted and farmed within the southern German wine region of Württemberg. This Trollinger from Andi Knauss is great for summer as it lends itself to being a perfect chillable red wine. Light-bodied, with good red fruit, moderately fresh acidity, and just enough tannins, this is a real crowd-pleaser on a hot summer’s day. But if you like your Beaujolais and Alpine wines, you’ll have a lot of fun with this all year round, come rain or shine.

Grape: Trollinger

About the Winemaker

Weingut Knauss is a family-owned winery located in the Rems Valley of southern Germany, with a rich history spanning four generations. Winemaking began as a hobby for the family, but Andi Knauss transformed it into a passionate career. Trained in Austria, Andi mastered organic vineyard practices and took over the winery back in 2004. He now manages over 15 hectares which are spread across 100 different plots in the village of Strümpfelbach, where diverse limestone and marl soils create unique terroirs.

The vineyards are situated at altitudes of 300-400 meters, and Andi has painstakingly built the estate parcel by parcel, like a mosaic, sometimes acquiring land just a single row at a time. The wines are made using hand-harvested fruit, direct pressing, and ambient fermentation in stainless steel with native yeasts. Aging occurs over 8 months in stainless steel and large 3000-liter barrels, without filtration or fining, and with minimal sulphur added.

Andi specializes in Lemberger (also known as Blaufrankisch), Riesling, Trollinger and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), producing wines that reflect a commitment to natural, biodynamic practices. This dedication results in expressive wines that showcase the distinctive character of Württemberg and the unique Remstal terroir, making them a favourite among those seeking authentic and sustainable wines.
